뉴스1에 따르면 미국 증권거래위원회(SEC)가 과징금이 1000만달러(약 136억5200만원)를 넘지 말아야 한다는 리플의 주장에 반박했다.
SEC는 이와 관련해 “이는 손목을 때리는 벌칙 수준”이라며 “기관을 상대로 XRP를 판매한 대가로 리플은 20억달러(2조7300억원)에 달하는 과징금을 지불해야 한다”고 강조했다.
이어 “리플은 1000만 달러를 넘지 말아야 한다고 주장하지만, 이는 오히려 다른 암호화폐 발행사로 하여금 섹션5를 위반하는 것이 매우 수익성 있는 행위로 여겨지게 만들 수 있다”며 “의회가 의무화한 과징금 지불이 단순한 사업 추진 비용으로 간주하도록 부추길 수 있다”고 지적했다.
